Irish Independent raises Herdwatch Profile

Irish Independent farming deputy editor Darragh McCullough  (also presenter of RTE’s Ear to The Ground) spoke to FRS (Farm Relief Services) & Herdwatch CEO, Peter Byrne about all the exciting things FRS are up to. The resulting article gives a glimpse into the profile of FRS, our CEO Peter, and the depth of services we provide to Farmers and other industry sectors, uncluding some truly unique services such as HoofWatch, the FRS Membership Benefit Scheme (MBS), and of course Herdwatch 😉

Herdwatch Celebrates 70 years of Macra

To mark the 70th anniversary of Macra na Feirme and the launch of Herdwatch, FRS presented Macra’s Agricultural Affairs Committee members with a free one year subscription to their Mobile Herd Manager at the committee’s latest meeting in Abbeyleix, Co. Laois.  Fabien Peyaud from FRS demonstrated the key features of this new innovative herd manager to the group of 20 committee members who represent Macra groups from around the country, with Macra CEO, Edmond Connolly, Macra President, Kieran O’Dowd and Agricultural Affairs Committee Chairperson Sean Coughlan also in attendance.

Speaking on behalf of Macra, Edmond Connolly, CEO said ‘we were delighted that FRS came along to show the group what Herdwatch can do to make life so much easier on the farm and are grateful for their kind gesture of a free subscription. After using the mobile herd manager myself I am thrilled to have the facility of my herd in my hand and to manage my fledgling Pedigree Angus herd. I am awaiting the birth of the first calf from a new addition to my herd and will be registering it through Herdwatch and I have to say I am looking forward to doing that. Embracing something new can be empowering.’

Sean Coughlan said “It’s interesting to see how mobile technology is evolving with the development of products that are relevant to farmers on the ground”

Fabien was able to show a preview of the next  major Herdwatch update due in a few days, which will enable the easy recording of weight and breeding events (insemination and scans). These events will automatically be passed on to ICBF.

‘1,500 calves have been registered via Herdwatch in the last few weeks and the feedback from users has been very positive. I am inspired by the way farmers have taken the step forward to embrace a new way of doing things and I am confident that this will continue as farmers see for themselves how Herdwatch will  improve the daily management of their herd.’ said Fabien Peyaud, FRS IT Manager and Herdwatch developer. ‘We welcome Macra to the fold and can see the motivation within Macra to embrace new things, which is why this organisation is celebrating the successes of 70 years.’ said Peyaud.

The Macra organisation was instrumental in the birth of FRS Farm Relief Services 35 years ago, so further celebrations of this special link and 70th Anniversary are planned, with an upcoming special  Herdwatch deal for Macra members, so watch this space 😉

Herdwatch gets extensive coverage in Farmers Journal

Jack Kennedy, Irish Farmers Journal Dairy Editor, visited a farm in Mothel, Co. Waterford last Friday to see first-hand how Herdwatch made a difference to 3 generations of the same family, farming a 100 cow herd. Mark, the Grandson, David, the Son, and Brendan, the Father (75 years milking), have completely embraced Herdwatch over the past few weeks. In fact, they now use it daily on 2 iPhones, an iPad and a Laptop. Mark said “We have been looking out for something like this for years. We used to text each other Remedy Records so that one of us would always have them”

When asked how long it takes to register a calf, David replied “20 seconds at most…the last update took so many steps out of the process it might even be quicker”

You can read Jack Kennedy’s full page report in today’s Farmers Journal, on page 30.

Herdwatch moves to Beta Phase

Herd

After months of internal development and testing, and recent approval by the Department of Agriculture for Herd Sync & Calf Registrations (see this post), Herdwatch is going to the next level, with a Beta version available for a limited number of users from the end of next week. We will be taking applications online for the next few days (here), and will randomly pick a number of farmers to be the lucky recipients of a free 1 year subscription to Herdwatch, starting with the Beta. So, where’s the catch?

In what will be the last in our series of (badly) paraphrased JFK quotes, we say: “Ask not what Herdwatch can do for you, but what you can do for Herdwatch!”. If you are interested in trying the Herdwatch Beta, here is what you need:

=> A Smartphone (iPhone or Android) and ideally a PC/Laptop
=> Be registered with Agfood.ie, the Department’s Online Register (a free service)
=> Be willing to give us regular feedback, and engage with our Support technicians
=> While we have done a lot of testing, you may find the odd “bug”, so we ask you to work with us while we resolve any issue
=> While we will do everything we can to avoid it, it is possible that you may lose some data (nothing affecting your Herd Register though)

We will be randomly picking from qualifying applicants, so don’t be too disappointed if you don’t get drawn out of the hat, we may extend the Beta numbers later, and you will always qualify for our “Early Adopter” discount when Herdwatch goes live soon!

If you’re still reading, that’s a good sign, now all you need to do is head over to this page and submit your details. If you had previously registered your interest in Herdwatch, but would like to apply for the Beta, please fill out this new form, it should only take a minute. Alternatively, or if you’re extra lazy 😉 you can send a text with the words “FRS BETA” to 51444 and we will get back to you in the next few days.

Keep an eye on our Twitter and Facebook pages for news & updates, we are up to over 800 followers on Twitter, not bad in 8 weeks! Thanks to all for your support, the wait is almost over…
